  • Short video of the simple LED stair lighting I installed a few months back. The unit is connected in parallel with motion detectors, so that walking up or down the stairs will activate the lights. Power is supplied via a wall outlet. Light color is warm white.

    Thanks to HitLights for their great products and customer service.

    The only product issue I have had so far is with the sticky backing on the LED strip itself, which is pretty much worthless. Use the mounting clips, or buy your own glue. I used heavy duty superglue.

    A few tips when buying parts:
    - If you prefer better quality components, look for the UL listed components.
    - For the LED lights themselves, I found a regular density strip was bright enough. High density would be too bright for this application.
    - Get the weatherproof version for your LED light strip. This will keep the strip protected, and make it easier to mount.
    - Toggle switch is not necessary, but is handy.
    - Cord management solutions and quantities should be varied to fit your stairs and cord routing choices.

    Total Approx Cost: $150 // 7 hours or less.

    Notes for Tools:
    - Depending on your application, you may want to use wood screws instead. Drywall screws fit my purpose.

    Screwdriver set.
    Drywall screws (At least 20). 1.5″ size 8.
    Superglue. I chose the gorilla glue variety.
    Wire stripper.
    Drill bit of approx 1/8″ size.

    1. Lay out the setup on the stairs before beginning. From the wall, this is the order. Legend: (Male (M)) (Female (F))
    – Power Adapter (M)
    – (F) Toggle Switch (M)
    – (F) 4 Way Splitter (M)
    – (F) Two 16 ft DC extensions (M)
    Note: two separate runs from this splitter listed. One goes down the stairs, the other ends near the top of the stairs. These runs will converge into a splitter near the top of the stairs.
    * Top of stairs run:
    – (F) Female DC barrel connector (PIR IN)
    – PIR Motion Unit
    – (PIR OUT) Male DC barrel plug (M)
    – (F) Female Coupling (F)
    * Bottom of stairs run:
    – (F) Female DC barrel connector (PIR IN)
    – PIR Motion Unit
    – (PIR OUT) Male DC barrel plug (M)
    – (F) One 16 ft DC Extension (Return to top of stairs location) (M)
    – (F) Female Coupling (F)
    * End Separate Runs
    – (M) 4 way splitter (F)
    – (M) Male Coupling (M)
    – (F) LED Lights

    This setup (parallel) will allow either motion detector to light up the LED strip.

    2. First test LED strip to ensure it is working. connect DC adapter to light strip and plug into outlet.

    3. Connect wires and make connections. Connect all DC wires, couplings. PIR connections:
    - If using a female DC connector: cut the wires below the strip connection module and strip the wire.
    - Continue on to insert red to positive terminal, and black to negative terminal.

    4. Test system.
    - Ensure Toggle switch is in the ON position and plug adapter into the wall.
    - Walk by motion detector to ensure LED light activation. Test both PIR units to make sure they work.
    - Position PIR units to your preference. Test positioning.

    5. Adhere PIR units to wall or staircase siding using screws.

    6. Drill Two to Three 1/8″ holes at various points in the backside of each Cordmate run.

    7. Lay out positioning for Cordmate system. Attach to wall using adhesive backing. Drill in drywall screws for added support.

    8. Run wiring to desired lengths. Run wires through Cordmate system as needed.

    9. Use mounting clips to position wires to wall or stairway siding.

    10. For LED strip with sticky backing, remove the tape and adhere the light strip to wall. I positioned 1cm below the top of the stairway wood panel.

    11. Use the superglue for extra adhesion. If your LED strip does not have backing, just use the glue to adhere to the stairway wood panel, or order extra clips to secure to drywall.

    This supplier offers high quality but low price products, it is really a nice manufacturer and business partner.
